Labor Day weekend is always a short getaway for us. A little road trip to wrap up summer.
This year, we explored Grass Valley, Auburn, Nevada City, and Sacramento, and for the first time, we took the beautiful Delta route from Fremont. What a lovely surprise! Driving alongside the serene Sacramento–San Joaquin Delta, with peaceful river views, levee roads and beautiful old bridges, made the journey itself part of the experience.
Along the way, we stopped at the charming little waterfront towns of Rio Vista, Isleton, and Walnut Grove. There’s something so relaxing about these small Delta communities, where life seems to move at a slower pace.
We also spent time exploring Auburn, Grass Valley, and Nevada City. We loved the historic buildings, old-fashioned storefronts and quaint small-town atmosphere.
From a wheelchair perspective, we found all three towns quite doable. Many of the main streets, shops and sightseeing areas can be enjoyed with a wheelchair, although some areas,especially in the historic districts have slopes, uneven surfaces and steeper terrain. With a little planning and assistance where needed, we were able to enjoy them comfortably.
And then an evening at the Old Sacramento Waterfront, strolling along the river and soaking up the lively atmosphere.
The waterfront area was very wheelchair-friendly for us, making it an easy and relaxing way to finish the day.
And as if the trip needed one more special moment, there were fireworks over the Sacramento waterfront! Completely unexpected and truly the icing on the cake.
A short Labor Day road trip, beautiful Delta scenery, charming historic towns, peaceful river views, and a little unexpected sparkle in the sky, the perfect way wrap up summer.
